Stanford Health Care's Professional Nursing Development Program (PNDP) promotes the life-long pursuit of expertise of the clinical nurse.

Stanford Health Care recognizes and rewards nurses who strive for excellence in the delivery of the highest quality of patient care, while demonstrating commitment to the profession of nursing.


PNDP Eligibility Criteria:

Primary Requirements
  • Current RN license.
  • At least ONE year of service at Stanford Health Care.
  • ANCC or CNO approved certification.
Specific CN III and CN IV Requirements
CN III
  • BSN or currently enrolled in a BSN program (for CN III only)/MSN/Doctor of Nursing
  • Greater than or equal to three years as a professional nurse
  • Greater/equal to one year in specialty
 CN IV
  • BSN/MSN/Doctor of Nursing
  • Greater than or equal to four years as a professional nurse
  • Greater/equal to two years in specialty
  • Member of professional nursing organization.

PNDP Preparation Course

The Pathway to Clinical Ladder Promotion: Professional Nurse Development Program (PNDP) Preparation Course is the first step towards your PNDP journey. 

By the end of this course, you will have an increased understanding of the following:

  • The development, skill acquisition, and a method to compare Benner stages of expertise and domains within one's professional nursing practice. 
  • How to transform domains of expert practice into a well written exemplar. 
  • The Professional Nurse Development Program (PNDP) application process, PNDP online application system, and additional PNDP resources.

PNDP Application Stages

I. Application Stage

  • All tasks in the online application must be completed, including the manager collaborator tasks, for the “submit” button to populate.
  • The manager collaborator tasks include Category A (ACE), manager selected peer review and management reference (if applicable).
  • The manager you selected in the prescreening section will review, validate, and approve achievement of criteria during the manager review process.
  • Use the three-dot button (...) located on the upper right-hand side of each task to reset or edit a completed task.

II. Manager Review Stage

After submitting the application for manager review, the manager will verify your points and supporting documentation, and provide their manager validations.

  • Non-Panel applicants: For non-panel candidates, your application is reviewed and approved by the nurse manager. Your clinical nurse status will be automatically renewed after the manager review process, and you will receive electronic confirmation of the renewal.
  • Applicants for new promotion and panel renewal: Final submission to the panel is the applicant's responsibility.

III. Panel Review Stage 

This stage is for applicants for new promotion and panel renewal ONLY.

After the manager review process: 

  1. Applicants will need to complete the "Application Confirmation" task.
  2. Acknowledge complete portfolio & click "mark as complete." 
  3. Click "submit" to submit application to the PNDP panel.
  4. The PNDP panel will review all aspects of your portfolio and invite you for an interview (if applicable).
  5. You will receive the results of your application within 40 days form the cycle due date.


Application Cycle Dates: February 1, June 1, October 1
