Scholarship and Grant Application

Friends of Nursing (FON) 

promotes professional excellence in nursing at Stanford Health Care.
This program hosted by the Office of the CNE through the Nursing Excellence department provides financial assistance to support nursing scholarships. 

promoting "Exemplary Professional Practice" and "Transformational Leadership".

(Exemplary Professional Practice: Participation in Professional Organizations)

(Transformational Leadership: Advancing Nursing Education)

FON also awards nursing grants for Evidence Based Practice projects and educational initiatives for Structural Empowerment".

(New Knowledge, Innovation, and Improvements: EBP Projects)

(Structural Empowerment: Staff and Patient Education Projects)


About the Friends of Nursing Grant Funding 

The Friends of Nursing Scholarship and Grant Program funds for:

1. Exemplary Professional Practice: Participation in Professional Organizations 

FON awards up to $1500 to cover for airfare and hotel expenses; meetings sponsored by approved national nursing professional organizations.

Purpose: To encourage staff nurses to elevate their professional practice by supporting them as they participate (attend and or present) in national nursing professional organizations.


2. Transformational Leadership: Advancing Nursing Education 

FON awards up to $1500 scholarship for BSN, Master’s or other postgraduate nursing studies

Purpose: To support transformational leadership among staff nurses through empowering them to pursue advancement in nursing education leading to professional excellence FON transformational leadership scholarship is available to nurses who had been granted and after the completed use the Stanford’s Transformational Scholarship program (https://stanfordhealthcare.org/health-careprofessionals/nursing/awards-grants/transformation scholarship.html). 

Only one FON transformational leadership scholarship will be awarded per FON period (May and December). Reimbursement will be provided after submission of a passing grade for the units submitted for scholarship.

3.  New Knowledge, Innovation, and Improvements: Evidence-based practice and or quality improvement projects
- Projects: Awards of up to $1,800 per project.
- Purpose: To support nurses' commitment to lifelong learning and application of continued education and literature review, aligning with the culture of inquiry by exploring new knowledge, innovation, and improvements through evidence-based or quality improvement initiatives that aim to improve patient and/or staff outcomes.
**NOTE: Research Study proposals requiring IRB approval should submit to the Stanford Nursing Alumni Legacy Grant.


4. Structural Empowerment: Staff Education Projects 
- Projects: Awards of up to $1,800 per project.
- Purpose: To support structural empowerment initiatives developing staff education programs including but not limited to materials, pamphlets, booklets, other handouts, evidence-based practice projects, and videotapes.
**NOTE: Costs or partial costs of training aids that directly support studies or education projects will be considered. Nursing time is not supported.


Criteria:
- Employee for at least 2 years
- 0.75-time commitment
- Plan to bring back information to Stanford i.e., in-service plan, change in practice plan etc.
- Letter of support from Patient Care Manager
- A second letter of support from another colleague i.e., APCM, Educator, CNS, MD or peer

Application process:
Recipients will be selected based on the strength of their application. Each application will be independently reviewed and scored by reviewers from the hospital. Applications with the highest scores will be awarded the scholarships.

Application point break down:
- Application questionnaire:  80 points
- Manager’s letter of support: 10 points
- Second letter of support: 10 points

Only projects with scores greater than 75 points will be considered for funding.

FON Program follows the SHC Concur reimbursement guidelines.
